Food Basket
If you are thinking a year ahead, sow seed. If you are thinking ten years ahead, plant a tree.
If you are thinking one hundred years ahead, educate the people.
These are the wise words of an anonymous Chinese poet.
South Africa has enough food to feed its entire population, and yet many people, remain vulnerable to hunger and malnutrition.
A household is considered food-secure when its occupants do not live in hunger or fear of starvation. How can we contribute to national food security? One of my first lessons in science was how to grow broad beans in cotton wool. Today I have my own fruit, vegetable and herb garden.
Educating the world about cultivating sustainable food sources is crucial to
our survival.
National Geographic, July 2011, Food Ark by Charles Siebert. “A crisis is looming: to feed our growing population, we’ll need to double food production. Yet crop yields aren’t increasing fast enough, and climate change and new diseases threaten the limited varieties we’ve come to depend on for food. Luckily we still have the seeds and breeds to ensure our future food supply, but we must take steps to save them.”
